Naming and Formulas for Acids

  1. Binary Acids
    1. As a general rule the formula for an acid starts with hydrogen.
    2. If acid consists of just two elements, then it is named Hydro-_______-ic Acid.
    3. For example HCl is Hydrochloric Acid.
    4. And the formula for Hydrobromic Acid is HBr.
  2. Other Acids
    1. For all other acids common names are used that cannot be deduced from the formula and vise versa.
    2. You should memorize the following:
      1. H2SO4 = Sulfuric acid
      2. HNO3 = Nitric Acid
      3. HC2H3O2 = acetic acid
