Chromatography Guiding Questions

  1. What do you notice about the relationship between how fast the dye moves up the paper and the settings for Solubility and Adsorption for that particular color?
  2. How can you reverse the order in which they appear as separate colors?
  3. What combination of Solubility and Adsorption will cause the blue or yellow dye to not move up the paper? Why?
  4. How can you set the Solubility and Adsorption of the dyes so they travel up the paper together and either don't separate or only slightly separate? Why does your setup work?
  5. What combination of Solubility and Absorption for both dyes represents a permanent marker in water?
  6. Some permanent markers respond to being put in paint thinner by only allowing one of the mixed colors to slightly move up the paper column. What set of circumstances will simulate that lab experience?
