Activation energy and Chemical Energy
Use the model below to explore the following questions:
- Two factors affect the activation energy, the strength of the bonds in the reactants and the strength of the bonds in the intermediate compounds that form partway through a reaction. Describe two ways to make the activation energy very low.
- If the activation energy is high do you need the initial temperature of the reactants to be low or high to make the reaction happen? Why?
- Set up a reaction so that the reaction will be spontaneous at any temperature. What is true of the activation energy. Is it high or low?
- Set up a reaction that converts the most chemical energy into heat energy. Describe this setup.
